Frontline for Dogs
Frontline for Dogs is one of the better anti-tick products on the market. It is the number one product recommended by veterinarians. Tick prevention is the key to avoiding diseases such as Lyme. The product is designed to be applied once a month and is good both as prevention and to kill existing fleas- killing them within 12 hours.
Frontline is approved for use with puppies 8 weeks or older, though we wouldn't use it till they are at least three months. Preferrably, after they are leaving the dam, as puppies can lick the stuff off each other. Frontline for Dogs is also waterproof, mostly because it works through the bloodstream, and not as a topical agent. We aren't absolutely sold on this type of "under the skin" agent. Frontlines's active ingredient, fipronil, becomes stored in the oil glands and is released slowly. It is nice that this results in constant protection. But... ... fipronil is basically a nerve agent. Most Boxers won't show side effects of the agent- but that dosen't neccessarly mean they aren't being affected. It's not like we can ask our dogs if they are feeling "dizzy" or "light-headed" or in "outer space", can we?
Dogs that show side effects suffer from: vomiting, increased salivation or excessive drooling, changes in the heart rate, decreased appetite, diarrhea, site irritation, lethargy, muscle tremors, decreased coordination and convulsions. (If you were in the Army you would know these are THE typical signs of a nerve agent... time to don masks!) You can save 80% on Frontline Plus right now. Ourselves, we opt for a more natural product called, Galaktiv by Fulltech, a Swiss firm.
