Dog Itching
Dog itching causes and remedies... The main causes of itching are: - fleas,mites, scabies,ticks or other parasites - allergies, either food or airborne - bacterial infections - fungal infections - skin cancer Treatment of itching is cause specific, but in general, bathing with a mild soap can be helpful. The water should be cool as warm water can actually irritate the itchy surfaces. Ironically, 'helping' your dog by scratching the effected area, generally only tends to aggravate the condition, and in the case of infection may help spread the disease. Vitamin E can be applied topically or adminstered orally for skin health. Fatty acids in general are good for skin, but if you buy a well balanced dog food, your dog may already be receiving adequate daily levels. There are a variety of allergy treatments available under a veterinarians care, if an allergy is in fact diagnosed. In case of food allergy, the best treatment is avoidance of the offending food-stuffs. That will require some time and testing. Airbourne allergies can be treated with antihistimines such as diphedramine, although, from what we have experienced, this isn't generally prescribed in Europe, for dogs (we are doing research into that situation as we speak).
