Corneal Dystrophy

Corneal Dystrophy is of particular interest to Boxer owners, because, not only is our breed susceptible to this eye-disorder, the Boxer also often acquires the type of dystrophy which requires medications or even surgery.

The disorder is inherited though our reserach cannot reveal exactly how,in Boxers. If any of you know, please let us know!

The disorder usually, but not neccesarily, occurs in both eyes and is non-inflammatory, characterised by greyish-white "cloud" like opaqueness that is nearly perfectly orbital, and centered in the eye.

While the same condition causes vision-loss in humans, for some reason, it is reported not to do so in dogs. We really can't understand why.

Therefore, the condition is often believed to be best left untreated.

However, in some cases (often with Boxers) the Corneal Dxstrophy can develop into an "Epithelial Dystrophy", a painful condition that may cause lesions or ulcers on the cornea.

Treatment can consist of topically applied steriods, or may require an operation.

Though treatments are usually succesful, there is a strong chance of re-occurence.

Most sources state that this is purely a hereditary disorder, however one veterinarian says that it can be aquired through a high fat and cholesterol diet.
